JOHN GREGORY

John Gregory was born bet. 1725 - 1740 in Halifax Co., Virginia which is not too far north of Orange Co., NC. Chatham County was formed from Orange Co., NC in 1771. John married Judah (Judith/Judy) Morgan Abt. 1750 and they can be found in the 1790 census for Chatham Co. (Hillsborough District), North Carolina, where he and his wife and family lived for a number of years. They lived on what was called the Gregory Plantation located on Lick Branch the waters of New Hope Creek and Indian Branch in Chatham County, North Carolina and their property adjoined John Gregory's brother, Thomas Gregory, and also the property of Gideon Goodwin. After John died in North Carolina (Bet. 1793 - 1794) his estate was divided up between his wife and children who left North Carolina and came to Smith Co., TN sometime after 1802.
